"We need an educated society". People often say this to defend public schools.
What do you mean by "educated"? Do you mean students will graduate with basic reading, writing and math proficiency? That they will be equipped to be positive contributions to society? There are many reports that the public school is not meeting these standards.
The reports are in: public school is not a "good investment" for taxpayers, and hasn't been so in decades. Education standards have fallen far below other countries and its not because of a lack of funding. The public education system has failed because it is structurally defective. We can no longer ignore the obvious heath, safety, literacy and character development problems in public education to support the "good intention" that our world needs public school system to function. The quality of education children are getting for the price we are paying is not consistent and should not be considered a “gold standard” of education.
It's agreed that yes, everyone should have an education. However, there are many ways to achieve that without continuing to fund this broken system. Due to the accessibility of inexpensive books and internet, people can be self taught or homeschool easier than ever before in history. Scholarships make private school more accessible to families and HSLDA offers grants for homeschooling. We're not living in the 1950s anymore.
You can judge a tree by its fruit. “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. Luke 6:43-44.

The diploma is not worth the paper it's printed on. Due to the bad school policies listed below, it has become another "participation trophy"
Schools and high school graduates have lost all credibility. We cannot judge schools based on performance. Employers can no longer accept their applicants' academic achievements listed on resumes. Stop funding this!
Schools are inflating grades
This is cheating and replacing "education" with babysitting. Instructors who inflate grades are lying outright about students' performance. This is not OK. We can no longer judge a student's good academic record when there is a possibility that their teacher gave them a grade they did not earn.

Students are graduating with low proficiency
Adults do not know basic information about our world- The internet is full of videos like this one of adults not able to answer basic questions. It is not funny.

States are removing the "exit" exam. These tests are used to measure a senior high school student's proficiency in English, math and science etc. Passing it is required in some states to earn a diploma. A.I. Makes it easy to cheat.
In this photo, a teacher quit because of the out of control usage of AI in her students writing. It makes me wonder how many children are able to do this and get away with it. It is not hard to comprehend that with little supervision and help from "busy" faux DINK parents and over worked teachers, a student can glide through school without actually doing the assignments.

Our society sets the bar on a moral compass really low
Our culture is rotten. People are rude. Parents are killing their children in dumpsters and hot cars. Laundry soap and deodorant are locked up in stores due to extreme theft. The divorce rate is high. Adults are openly displaying bondage on city streets. But hey, at least these individuals attended Public school and went to prom. Right?

High school graduates are unhirable
Due to their poor work ethic, inability to follow basic instructions and low proficiency skills, educated, able- bodied adults are un-hirable. View this video of Dr. Phil discuss with guests about how our country's graduates have a terrible word ethic.
